Naina Devi Temple, Nainital, Uttarakhand is famous for the lake Naini, near which this temple is located.

It is believed that Nainital figures in some ancient myths of the country India. In the Manas Khand of the Skand Puranas, this Naini Lake is called as the Tri-Rishi-Sarovar, which hints at the story of three rishis - Atri, Pulaha and Pulastya who went to Nainital and found no water to drink, and hence they dug a large hole at the location of the present day Naini lake and filled it with water from the Manasarovar lake, which is in Tibet. So, it is said that a dip in Naini Lake - so called the lesser Manasarovar, earns merit equal to a dip in the great Mansarovar lake.
The Naina devi temple is also considered to be one of the 64 Shakti Peeths, or religious sites where parts of the charred body of Godess Sati fell on earth while being carried by the Lord Shiva. It is believed that the eye of Godess Sati fell here. Hence, this temple is called as NAINA-DEVI.
